Rugby is a fast-moving, high contact sport that originated in England and is now popular all across the world.

In a thrilling match that kept fans on the edge of their seats, the Kansas City Blues Rugby Football Club emerged victorious with a final score of 27-11.

The Kansas City Blues RFC (35) kicked off their season as they hosted Wisconsin RFC (14) in their first home game of the season at the Kansas City Current facility on Saturday, Sept. 9.

From the beginning, it was clear the Blues were serious about this match. In a stunning display of skill, alternate captain Greg Fry wasted no time, scoring a try within the first 30 seconds, putting the Blues ahead by five points.

However, Wisconsin RFC was quick to respond, narrowing the gap with a well-executed field goal that added three points to their score. The two teams traded blows throughout the game.

As the match wore on, it was the Blues who managed to gain an advantage. Captain Jimmy Lillis, a former rugby star at Lindenwood University, led by example, scoring a pivotal try that further solidified their lead.

Michael Lillis, a 23-year-old senior majoring in accounting at UMKC, earned some playing time towards the end of the match. Michael, affectionately known as “Baby Feet” and “Spillis” by teammates, is hailed for his grit on the field as “he’s tougher than a woodpecker’s lips,” said Blues player, Scott McAvoy. Off the field, Michael enjoys slugging down beers and works part time for Accountable Mudjacking, a business owned by Lillis.

In the end, the Blues were victorious, winning by an 11-point margin. The win was celebrated by a passionate crowd, primarily composed of the Lillis’ family and friends, whose connections run deep within the club’s history.

Reflecting on the match, Michael said, “We need to catch the ball more often and practice moving fluently on the pitch.”

Afterwards, Blues’ members extended their tradition of camaraderie by hosting a team social at Block 15 Tavern & Exchange in River Market. This event exemplified the team’s family-oriented values, as both sides came together to share food and drinks, reinforcing the bonds of sportsmanship that rugby fosters.

The Blues also expressed their gratitude to sponsors Chris George Custom Homes and Greenlight Dispensary for continued support.

With a successful home opener behind them, the Blues are poised to build on their early-season momentum and continue their pursuit of rugby superiority.
