Kansas City Athletics announced today that Kansas native Mark Turgeon is its head coach for the 2026-27 season.
The announcement followed the release of fourth-year head coach Marvin Menzies.
“We are delighted to welcome Coach Turgeon and his wife Ann to the Roo family,” Athletic Director Dr. Brandon Martin said. “Coach Turgeon brings a wealth of credibility and success for our fan base, alumni, donors and key stakeholders throughout Kansas City.”
Turgeon is a two-time conference champion and coach of the year. Throughout his career, Turgeon coached 11 future NBA players and has led three programs to 14 postseason appearances.
“It is an honor to be returning home and to be trusted to build a winning tradition with Kansas City men’s basketball,” Turgeon said. “It was obvious through our initial conversations that I could build a strong partnership with Dr. Martin and Chancellor Agrawal.”
Former Roo News sports editor Cristian Martinez expressed the positive implications of this decision.
“Social media reaction is super positive,” said Martinez. “A guy who is a guaranteed D1 winner and the biggest name in the Summit? I’d assume there’s more to this than expected.”
