UMKC is one of many schools nationwide affected by a cybersecurity attack from ShinyHunters, a criminal hacker group.
The attack reached UMKC Canvas pages around 3 p.m. on May 7. Users were greeted with a message reading “ShinyHunters has breached Instructure (again).”
Instructure is the parent company of Canvas. ShinyHunters claims to have breached private data from users, however, Instructure claims there are no indications that any private information has been compromised.
A UMKC Information Services (IS) representative said students should not attempt to login at this time, and should reset their passwords if they have.
Managing Editor of The Chronicle indicates financial information, dates of birth, social security numbers, and passwords would be safe in the breach.
According to Instructure, names, student ID numbers, email addresses and messages sent between users are potentially among the compromised information.
The message from ShinyHunters says Instructure has until end of day May 12 to contact the hacker group.
Students can call IS at 8162352000 for help resetting their passwords.
