UMKC held an introductory press conference on March 9 for the new Kansas City men’s head basketball coach, Mark Turgeon.
With over 300 people in attendance, the excitement for the new era of Roos’ basketball was put on full display at Union Station.
“I’m back because I love this city,” said Turgeon. “This town means a lot to me.”
Mark Turgeon is one of the best college coaches of all time. With a record of 476-275, two Coach of the Year awards, and ten appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Turgeon is ready to bring his championship pedigree to Kansas City for next season.
UMKC men’s basketball struggles were severe this past season. With net rankings of 358 out of 364, among some of the worst basketball programs in the country.
Most coaches would be discouraged by the rankings, but Coach Turgeon looks to bring the best talent around the country to the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
“We have a great vision for what we’re trying to do,” said Turgeon. “Identifying over 250 players, seeing live over 50 players.”
With the help of his son, William Turgeon, and multiple coaches from elite power five universities, it appears Turgeon has the individuals who are looking to carry out a common vision of success.
“We’re going to put a great staff together that grinds, not just doing it on the floor, but off.”
Turgeon ended his speech by promising to bring success to Kansas City.
“Do not put limitations on our program,” said Turgeon. “We’re trying to be the best team that Kansas City basketball has ever seen.”
