Mark Turgeon is getting a head start on rebuilding the Kansas City men’s basketball team with local players

  The hiring of Mark Turgeon as the new head coach for the Kansas City men’s basketball team has drawn attention from local athletes.

  Since being hired, Turgeon has had nine student-athletes commit to suit up and play basketball for UMKC. Five of those nine recruits are from Kansas and Missouri, one being incoming freshman DJ Jackson Jr.

  “I chose Kansas City because it’s my hometown team. I want to show that the talent in Kansas City is slept on,” Jackson said.

  After averaging 19 points, six assists, and five rebounds at Piper High School, he looks to take his skillset and elevate the UMKC basketball roster. 

  Coach Turgeon also signed three-star prospect Cameron Love. 

  Love recently won the KSHSAA 6A State Championship with Olathe North High School after receiving Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-State honors.

  “It’s my hometown city,” said Love, “ I want to make a difference and change Kansas City basketball.”
