The Kansas City Roos men’s basketball team dropped its eighth straight game on Wednesday, Feb. 4, against the South Dakota Coyotes.
It was a very slow first half, as neither team had a player with double-digit points. The Roos played very good defense and forced South Dakota to go 0-10 from the three-point line in the first half, too.
Both teams picked up the pace after halftime, but the game was still up in the air. With about 38 seconds left, junior guard Jamaria Clark hit a free throw to put the Roos up one point. The score was 64-63.
When it looked like Kansas City was going to pull out the win, South Dakota senior center Cameron Fens hit a free throw with 23 seconds left to tie the game at 64 apiece and send the game into overtime.
Kansas City put up a good fight but ultimately lost to South Dakota after five more minutes of action. The final score was 75-82.
Head coach Marvin Menzies seemed very displeased with the number of free throws that South Dakota shot. The Coyotes shot 35 while the Roos shot just 13.
“I guess we were just fouling too much,” said Menzies.
The Roos could not contain Cameron Fens. He scored 23 points and had 12 rebounds on the night.
Redshirt junior forward Chris Dockery had an efficient game. He scored 17 points on 78% shooting and grabbed eight rebounds on the night.
Junior guard CJ Evans also did his best to keep Kansas City alive. He scored 16 points and added four assists.
Even though Kansas City is on an eight-game losing streak, Coach Menzies is still confident in his team and hopes to turn it around.
“We just have to keep fighting and getting better, and that’s what we’re going to do.”
