The Kansas City Roos men’s basketball team extended its losing streak to six after a close 61-69 loss at home against the Denver Pioneers on Wednesday, Jan. 28.
The game was a slow and competitive fight between both teams, but Kansas City struggled on the boards, especially on the offensive side. Denver grabbed 51 rebounds, while Kansas City only grabbed 36.
“The toughest factor was their size,” said head coach Marvin Menzies. “That was ultimately the story of the game.”
The Roos also had trouble guarding Denver sophomore guard Carson Johnson. He scored 22 points and shot 40% from the three-point line.
Kansas City had to go into battle without its top two scorers: junior guards CJ Evans and Karmello Branch. Both were out with an illness.
“Obviously, not having CJ and Mello hurt us offensively,” said Menzies. “I’m hoping that they will be ready to play on Sunday.”
Senior guard Kasheem Grady II led the Roos in scoring for a fourth consecutive game. He scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds on the night.
Junior guard Jayson Petty was trying to keep Kansas City in the game. Petty scored 16 points and had four steals on the defensive end.
The Roos’ next game is Sunday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m. against the St. Thomas Tommies.
