Super Bowl LX marks the second in the last seven seasons to not feature the Kansas City Chiefs. UMKC students shared their Super Bowl Sunday plans with a look ahead at whether KC will be back in the fold next year.
The Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots will kick off this Sunday at 5:30 p.m. at Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers.
Brayden Warren, a freshman biology and chemistry major, is looking forward to the game, despite a frustrating Chiefs season.
“I’ll still care, I’ll hang out with a few of my friends and have a chill night,” Warren said.
Coming into the season, NFL analysts consistently regarded the Chiefs as in the top echelon of Super Bowl LX contenders. Missing the playoffs was a big shock for some fans.
“It’s not like I’m devastated by it, but I guess I’m still a little bit upset,” Warren said, referring to the Chiefs’ 2025-2026 season.
The last time that Kansas City missed the playoffs was in 2014. This 10-consecutive playoff appearance run is the second most in NFL history. Trailing none other than Tom Brady’s New England Patriots, lasting from 2009 to 2019.
Noah Devlin, a junior pre-dental student, has been a Patriots fan since he was 8-years-old.
“I caught the entire second dynasty,” said Devlin.
Devlin is no stranger to navigating Super Bowl week, just as the Chiefs fans around him on campus are. He says he’s nervous for the game and realizes that his Pats are the underdog.
Overall, Devlin knows that when the lights are on come Sunday, “anything can happen.” Devlin noted the Seahawks and his Patriots are both solid all-around football teams.
Devlin cited value in Kansas City’s decision to bring back their offensive-coordinator from the first two Super Bowls in the Chiefs’ current dynasty.
“Eric Bieniemy is huge because ever since Matt Nagy came in, Mahomes’ numbers have been horrible. With Bieniemy, he was the guy,” Devlin said.
Ethan Bui, a junior electrical engineering student, will be busy smoking short ribs in time for the game, true to Kansas City culture.
“I don’t really care who wins, but I’ll still be watching,” Bui said, “Making barbeque, that’s the most important part.”
