With just a few months away from the NFL playoffs, UMKC Chiefs fans let us know who they’re rooting for among the unsung heroes of this season.
Five Chiefs remain from the Super Bowl LIV victory campaign in 2020, the first of Patrick Mahomes’ illustrious career. With all this roster turnover, drafts and free agency have paved the way for the Chiefs’ prolonged success.
“I like Kareem Hunt’s story, earning Coach Reid’s trust back,” said Anthony Ulberg, freshman pharmacy major.
Hunt was released by the Chiefs in 2018 after a video surfaced of him involved in a violent confrontation with a woman. A pivotal part of Andy Reid’s lasting legacy is the second chance. Most notably, serving as head coach during Michael Vick’s 2010 comeback player of the year campaign.
Hunt’s bounce-back career has been helpful to the Chiefs. Finishing Monday night’s victory over the Washington Commanders with a pair of visits to the endzone for the second chancer.
“He’s both super agile and a power back at the same time,” Ulberg said. “Whether it’s juking the crap out of somebody or trucking the crap out of somebody, he always figures out a way to get through.”
Statistically, this year Hunt has been more effective in short-yard conversions than the tush push.
Raphael Smith, freshman design student, was quick to mention former Mizzou middle linebacker Nick Bolton..“He’s our dark horse on defense,” Smith said. “I consider him our leader over Chris Jones, but that’s just me.”
Bolton led the Chiefs with 73 tackles last year.
Smith dug deep in his Chiefs fandom to highlight another fan favorite.
“Something tells me Remigio is going to be amazing.” Smith praised Nikko Remigio’s tenacity as our current kick and punt returner. “You don’t see a lot of fair catches out of him, he’s willing to run with the ball every time he catches it and that’s why I like him,” Smith said.
Remigio wasn’t the only young receiver to get a shoutout for their potential.
“Worthy brings so much,” Kevin Madge, freshman chemical engineering student, said. Madge mentioned Worthy being the highlight in Kansas City’s Superbowl LIX loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, with 157 yards and two touchdowns.
“I respect him for that,” Madge said.
