Kevin Archer started with a phone and a vision.
But today, the 27-year-old local documents what the city wears on Instagram, being the first to showcase unfiltered street style in the Kansas City metro.
Whether he’s circling the block for hours waiting for a muse, or running across streets to get the shot, his work observes the language created by clothes. Clunky statement belts, zebra-print mini purses, JNCO jeans and penny loafers. He captured those who stood out – and the city’s taking it in.
Amassing over 1,000 followers in two months, it’s hard to imagine it all began with an iPhone. Or that just last year, he put in over $2,000 in a Sony A6700 and gear, all for this side gig.
However, at the hearth, Archer’s cornerstone traces back to a hometown friend in Kumasi, Ghana.

Archer worked alongside film and animation student Blagogee Seyram during his sophomore year of college in 2017, stretching their limits with what they already had in their pockets.
“He’s a creative genius, and I picked up a lot from him,” Archer said. “We started out shooting on iPhones, collaborating on creative direction, and he often served as my muse.”
While pursuing his master’s at Park University, Archer initially captured street style as a one-off thing. He visited the KC Vintage Flea Market in July 2023 and was enamored by the city’s distinct fashion culture, particularly among the youth.
He then launched an account under “streetstylebykev” in September, asking friends to support his work.
“It’s always fascinating to see individuality on display at local flea markets and around the KC metro,” Archer said. “I wanted to capture and share that unique style to show that Kansas City is about more than just great barbecue – it’s a hub of creativity and culture.”

To Archer, personal style communicates who you are at that very moment. It’s visual, deliberate, and most importantly, it rewrites how you are perceived.
“I always aim for my images to make an artistic statement. Something that goes beyond just appearance,” Archer said. “I want my work to draw out sentiments and emotions from people, whether it’s nostalgia, curiosity or connection.”
From KU graduate Nana Amfo II, who lent his camera to Archer early on, to Founder Owais Qureini of Undefined Collective as a guiding post, his deep love for the metro is harbored by the long list of people who have shaped his experience.
“There’s a genuine sense of community here,” Archer said. “There’s a genuine willingness to see others succeed, whether it’s offering guidance, sharing opportunities, or simply showing up for each other’s work… KC has a way of making you feel seen and supported.”

Creativity doesn’t start with what you have, but with what you see. He added that despite his rapid growth on Instagram, there’s so much to photography that remains untapped. As his work continues to evolve, Archer sets himself apart by watching closely and giving his subjects room to speak for themselves.
As Archer puts it simply, “It’s a process. You just gotta enjoy the process.”
