The Kansas City Chiefs’ campaign has raised concern among fans after early losses and inconsistent performances.
Fans are coping differently from one another, and UMKC students are immersing themselves in the fandom more closely than before.
Kennedy Lee, a third-year business administration major, expressed her perspective that the Chiefs’ statistics this season are too low due to the number of injuries to players this season.
“Getting past injuries and getting through the setbacks will be the biggest struggle for the Chiefs in general,” Lee said.
As the season continues, fans have noticed inconsistent plays. Simple mistakes and penalties have continued to leave holes across the offensive, defensive and special teams.
Ethan Nguyen, a third-year B.A./M.D. student, considers the franchise to create better tactics for the offensive and defensive line.
“The Chiefs desperately need a new running back to revitalize the backfield. The coaches continue to rely on checkdowns and sweeps with receivers, leading to early injuries without the running back’s support for blocking and explosive plays.”
New adaptations to plays have sparked conversations amongst the Chiefs kingdom. The fandom has come closer together than before, bonding over the expectations of the team while remaining loyal.
Marisa Brown, a third-year business major who grew up in Kansas City, said she will always be a Chiefs fan at heart.
“I grew up watching the Chiefs, so I’ll always have a soft spot for them. Fans want the best for the team, so I hope they start looking at the bigger picture and developing their wide receiver and running back depth.”
Fans continue holding onto the dynasty for hope of change while tightening their loyalty to the fandom.
