Students from the UMKC Development Video Game Club have a passion for teaching others techniques on creating video games and their unique characters.
The club develops different games depending on development, category, mood, tone and chooses different props that the game will feature.
“We are developing a two-dimensional fighting game, dress-up style inspired by Dress to Impress and Barn Mechanics,” said Tomie Williams, a junior computer science major and the Vice President of the club.
“We’re going to start new games from scratch, it’ll take a month, and then it’ll have to be done. But typically, the timeframe we use is to just go from nothing to having a playable game done,” said Cameron Cianciolo, a junior computer science major.
Designing video games can be a complex topic to think about, so students are encouraged to ask for helpful tips and advice from people who have had experience in the club.
“Everyone interested in gaming, even if you don’t have experience. I didn’t have experience before I even got into the club,” said Williams.
The club is opening doors for students who are still figuring out where to get started with coding.
“I was kind of interested in getting experience in any kind of coding or just trying new things and I also like video games so it worked out,” said Zack Steffen, a freshman with an undecided major.
Anyone is welcome to participate in the Game Dev club. The group meets on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. For more information on how to get involved, visit their RooGroups page.

Nice work, Jonathan! I’d love to check out one of their video game projects.
