Summer at UMKC has a sparse student population around campus, as opposed to the usual crowds of classes and events during the school year.
UMKC, known as a commuter school, has students living all over the KC metro area, making it harder for some to stay in touch with their school friends without being on campus for classes.
“Since we would have classes together, it was easier to catch up because you would see them a few times a week. Since you’re seeing them through school, it’s easier to keep conversations,” said junior Mikayla Farage, a media arts and design major.
Students who have a further commute felt they had to make a more committed effort to spend time with their classmates. Some felt a lack of community within campus life, causing them to only be on campus for classes instead of participating in student organizations.
“I do wish that I felt more sense of community,” said senior philosophy major Kylie Marshal. “If the students felt like whatever organization was talking to them individually, they would be more open to coming, but it feels like we’re just bodies.”
Students suggest that the university keep lists with available clubs and classes up-to-date, which would make it easier for them to stay connected with both campus and their community during the summer.
“I do have a couple friends who I have hung out with from school. It’s not hard work, but it is something that you have to put time into and invest your energy,” said Marshal.
While text was the main form of communication, Marshal created a calendar with her planned hang outs and when her friends were going out of town, making it easier for her to schedule in time for them.
Students also recommended UMKC to hold events over the summer to help them stay in touch with their college friends.
“I would like to stay somewhat connected with my school friends and if there was a club we did that would help me stay connected and also it would be fun to go back to campus,” said Farage.
