Kansas City’s women’s basketball team must forfeit the game against St. Thomas played on Jan. 2 due to a violation of NCAA and Summit League bylaws, according to a statement released Friday by Summit League commissioner Josh Fenton.
“On January 7, Kansas City Athletics reported a violation of NCAA and Summit League bylaws,” said Fenton. “This obligated the League office to have the outcome of the women’s basketball contest on January 2 against St. Thomas altered to result in a forfeit by Kansas City.”
According to the statement, no other games will be affected by the violation. However, assistant commissioner Ryan Powell stated that the official NCAA website, as well as other sites, may not reflect the updated standings.
Jay Elsen, a play-by-play commentator for Midco Sports, made a post on X on Friday. The post clarified that, while the contest will result in a forfeit, all statistics will be upheld.
On Tuesday, Kansas City Athletics released a statement regarding the situation.
“Kansas City Athletics was made aware of and promptly self-reported a rules violation that impacted the women’s basketball team’s Jan. 2 win over St. Thomas,” the statement said. “KC Athletics has accepted the league’s ruling.”
Neither statement revealed the nature of the violation. However, with no further comment by either party, the cause will remain a mystery.
The final standings used for the Summit League tournament will be reflected by the official Summit League website.
Kansas City’s women’s basketball team now stands at 4-4 in conference play and are the fourth seed in the Summit League.
