Women’s basketball: Kansas City’s second quarter collapse leads to loss against Northern Iowa

After being selected into the WNIT tournament, the Kansas City Roos bowed out quickly after losing to the Northern Iowa Panthers 75-58.

Senior guard Naomie Alnatas led the team once again in scoring, totaling 24 points in 35 minutes. She also provided three steals, five rebounds and three assists. However, her four turnovers were momentum killers when Kansas City tried to gain traction.

Graduate forward Brooklyn McDavid could not get things going on offense. On 18 attempts, she only made six baskets, totaling 17 points. While she was a force inside the paint in the regular season, McDavid had a quiet performance against the Panthers. She ended the night with one steal, two assists, four rebounds and two turnovers.

The Roos needed someone to step up if they wanted any chance at advancing to the second round. While Alnatas and McDavid scored 15+ points, no other Roo could get past 10.

Northern Iowa shut out the likes of graduate guard Kiara Bradley and senior guard Mandy Willems, both of who usually dominate at the three-point line. Bradley didn’t even attempt a three, while Willems made only one of her four total shots from downtown. They combined for 10 total points.

Even though her presence was felt on the glass, senior forward Paige Bradford was inefficient on offense. She mustered a mere seven points while notching only one assist.

The rest of the Roos who played against the Panthers were nonfactors. Out of the four players who entered the court, they totaled six rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal. They made zero baskets.

Defensively, Kansas City could not contain Northern Iowa in the second and third quarter. In both quarters, the Panthers outscored the Roos 40-21.

Now, a season full of ups and downs is officially over for the Kansas City Roos. Fans will have to wait and see what next season’s roster looks like with two starters officially graduating.
