As the NFL prepares itself for yet another season, teams like the Kansas City Chiefs must trim their roster to 53 total players. Here is a look at some surprising departures, expected cuts and players the Chiefs could bring in to bolster the squad.
Surprising cuts
One of the most unexpected moves was the release of Tim Ward. As an undrafted free agent, he was viewed as a huge project. Nonetheless, his development has been quite impressive. Take a look at one of his recent plays against the San Francisco 49ers:
Originally, it was expected that Ward would stay with the team and even begin to contribute at the next level. He did not last too long on the waiver wire, as the New York Jets immediately signed him.
Another unfortunate move was cutting BoPete Keyes. Though he may not be a household name within the franchise, he still played a key role on special teams. His potential and physical abilities made him a nice project for the organization. This play alone shows the type of player he can be down the road:
Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard made his move and signed Keyes as soon as he got cut.
Expected cuts
One player that had expectations but could not meet them was running back Darwin Thompson. Once a popular name within the team, Thompson was going downhill throughout the preseason.
The first falling domino signaling his release came against the 49ers, when Thompson headbutted a 49ers plan and drew an unnecessary roughness penalty.
Running back Derrick Gore’s success with the Chiefs sealed Thompson’s fate. Gore did a fantastic job running the football. His ability to make plays in open space and aggressive running style convinced the team that he deserved a practice squad spot.
Thompson has since signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he can continue to develop and do great things at a starting level.
Taco Charlton’s departure was unsurpring. In the offseason, he signed a one-year deal. It was a team-friendly contract to allow his development and to show the organization that he deserved an extension. After a couple of months, however, it looks like he no longer fits with the team.
He will land on a roster at some point this season, and may even come back to Kansas City with the right moves. His potential should be intriguing to other teams.
One player to sign after roster cuts
Following a spate of releases in the NFL, there is one specific player that the Chiefs should take a look at.
John Brown asked to be released by the Las Vegas Raiders, and the Chiefs should take a look at signing the former Buffalo Bills wideout.
His highlight reel from last season should speak for itself.
Brown has been a good WR2 for many years. His experience should garner the attention of the front office, along with his solid hands, speed and route-running abilities. Brown would be a much appreciated weapon for quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Should Kansas City not sign a wide receiver, look for it to address the pass rush and the linebacker position.
General manager Brett Veach’s decision to cut many promising young players was expected. There has not been a roster with this much quality depth in ages.
