UMKC Campus Facilities weighs in on new construction on the Quad

  UMKC is once again undergoing a major construction project at the Quad between Scofield and Flarsheim Hall.

  Students can find the path to Miller Nichols Library in between the halls to be blocked by orange fencing, protecting a dug-up area around the steam vents and piping.

  “This work started due to a leak in the domestic water line that feeds Scofield Hall. During the process of this repair, a steam leak was discovered and is now being repaired as well,” said Robert Wren, the director of UMKC Campus Facilities Management.

  “It’s confusing, really,” says Juice Wilde, a computer science major. “Weren’t they just doing construction right there?”

  Unlike many of the halls on the Quad, Flarsheim and Scofield are not connected.

  Around the same time last year, a major construction project took place at the Quad, completely blocking one of Flarsheim’s entrances and forcing students to find another way into the hall.

  The last construction project was aimed at replacing the steam pipes and was almost three times bigger than the current project.

  “At least it’s not as bad as last year,” said Zach Green, a computer science major. “Students can use the hallways of Flarsheim to get to Miller Nichols.”

  Wren dismissed claims that the current construction project was related to last year’s, saying that, “These are new issues and piping that is located underground can fail at any time and without warning.”

  Wren also acknowledged the frustration and questions that have arisen since the beginning of this construction, since the new project comes a short time after the old one.
