Newly appointed interim SGA President Andrew Tracey plans to maintain ongoing initiatives from past presidents.
Roo Refresh is a service he believes can engage students while receiving important data.
“Yasmen Hassen, the previous president, started Roo Refresh, and I really like the idea,” said Tracey. “We give out free drinks and ask students to fill out a survey about what they want to see changed on campus.”
Data collected from Roo Refresh surveys in the past played an important role in quality control at the dining hall, according to Tracey.
Along with increased student engagement, Tracey also hopes to see UMKC adopt more sustainable practices.
“I just want to see environmental overhauls like using less energy in buildings and reducing the carbon footprint,” said Tracey.
The SGA also appointed Justin Wu as vice president and Riley Cole as internal affairs director during the most recent meeting.
The decision comes following a “chaotic” election process following the resignation of former SGA president Justice Horn. Despite this, Wu and Cole feel prepared to assume their respective roles.
“[I] feel pretty comfortable,” Wu said. “I know it’s more responsibility, but I think it’s cool to be able to do more for the students.”
Cole feels his experience in the Senate has prepared him for the new position.
“I think I can use the information I was trying to gather in the senate in this new position to reach a greater audience,” said Cole.
Cole also noted his ideas of trying to have SGA represented in the FSE courses as a way to get more students aware of the association and involved with it.
“I think our ultimate goal would be to get SGA mentioned in the student involvement section, or ideally even our own section,” said Cole, “Ultimately, getting people excited to either get on board with what we do or even join.”
The sudden resignation of Horn was something that Cole noted was far from ideal, but reassures that SGA and its new executive board are still dedicated to its “core values,” and plans to build upon some of what Horn left behind.
“Everything that was feasible from the last board is going to stay,” said Cole, “But I do think we have new ideas and they’re going to be exciting.”
