Advancing Campus Engagement: SGA’s Proactive Legislative Proposals

The meeting concluded in 25 minutes and both proposed bills passed on their first reading to the SGA Senate.

The Student Government Association (SGA) had a quick meeting on Monday, Feb. 19 to propose two new bills.

The first bill, titled “Announcements Resolution,” was proposed by Senator Shewit Abai.

“This is just another way to connect the school with the student body and Senate so we can all work together and they get to know what we’re doing,” Abai said.

The group aims to work with Press Secretary Yasmen Hassen, who would send a monthly mass email with updated legislation to inform students of what’s happening in SGA.

Speaker of the Senate Andrew Tracey and Senator Simrin Phatak proposed the second bill, called the “Sustainability Fee Adjustment Referendum.”

The Environmental Student Council and the SGA proposed that UMKC reallocate funds from the current One Fee to enable funding for said sustainability management.

A small percentage of the One Fee would be taken out of each student’s student life fee and would not add an extra charge to tuition.

“UMKC has previously prioritized sustainability efforts,” Phatak said. “UMKC’s past accomplishments required significant investment in sustainability management.”

They also proposed that students would vote on a ballot for this One Fee to be adjusted to accommodate these sustainability efforts on their tuition.

The SGA Senate passed the first reading of each of these bills and the process of their approval will continue at the next meeting on March 4.

“If any other students want to know what is going on in SGA, we have all of our meeting minutes – executive and senate – on Roo Groups,” said Internal Affairs Director Scott Nguyen.
