This spring, students on UMKC campus are seeking volunteer opportunities and ways to give back to Kansas City.

All over the Metro, businesses are offering ways for students to help individuals with disabilities, animals, children and other programs in need of more support.

Students can get involved with the Kansas City Public Broadcasting System, which strives to make media and news accessible for all Kansas City residents.

For students that enjoy working behind the scenes, KCPBS is in need of ambassadors who can help break down equipment, help usher during seated events, enter data and more.

UMKC students that enjoy working in the forefront of projects should know that KCPBS is also seeking volunteers who can be trained to help at the front desk, work as tour guides and help train teachers.

Students interested in this opportunity can fill out a volunteer inquiry form here.

For students who want to work with children, Hickman Mills School District in the Grandview area is accepting volunteer mentors and district ambassadors. UMKC students can help enrich the lives of children in the district by helping with homework and social skills.

“These programs show the kids that the community really cares about them,” said fifth-year Ingels Elementary Special Education teacher Brittany Gash. “They love when people volunteer to come help.”

Students can contact the Hickman Mills Director of Public Information and Partnerships at (816) 316-7000.

For UMKC students that prefer working with animals, the Pet Resource Center of Kansas City offers several opportunities that serve both the people and animals of Kansas City.

This organization works to provide resources for low-income households with pets. Community members are encouraged to fill out an application explaining their needs, and upon application approval, pet owners can receive access to services like free spaying and neutering and pet food.

The Pet Resource Center is conveniently located five minutes from UMKC campus and accepts volunteer applications all year. Students interested in volunteering with this organization are encouraged to fill out a volunteer application on their website.

A more extensive list of volunteer opportunities in the Kansas City area can be found here.
