The Roos put in a wonderful effort against a formidable South Dakota team on Friday. Taking advantage of a late penalty kick, the Roos won the contest 3-2.

In the first half, UMKC only had three shots on goal. However, one of those shots ended up in the back of South Dakota’s net, giving the Roos a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. South Dakota had eight shots on goal in the first half and kept up the pace in the second half.

The game was marked by some heavy physicality on both sides of the ball. While there was no overt red card, there were occasions when it looked like a yellow or red card-level offense had been committed.

Defense was of high caliber as far as the Roos were concerned. Despite the shots on goal by South Dakota, the Roos’ defense held its own. That was monumental, since the Roos had created very few chances to score throughout most of the game.

UMKC junior Emily Jensen had one goal and one assist in the game, her goal serving as the game-winning penalty kick.

Coach Jess Smith was pleased with the team’s performance, especially against a tough opponent like South Dakota.

“They are a strong team,” Smith said. “Our team never gave up.”
