Two men were detained on Thursday Oct. 30 in the UMKC Rockhill parking garage around 12:30 p.m. following a stolen car chase.
Skylar Orender, a resident of Merriam, KS., said his black Chevrolet Silverado was stolen around 3 p.m. on Wednesday. He noticed the truck was gone this morning and filed a police report.
Orender was given Lojack information from his dealership, which helped track the truck. He said the carjackers traveled from Merriam, to Kansas City, to Overland Park and finally to UMKC.
“[I] almost caught up with him twice but [a] truck is a lot faster than a car so he took off on me,” said Orender.
The thieves parked the truck in Rockhill, hitting a pole in the process, and took off running before police caught them.
Orender said there was a gun in his center console at the time of the theft. Police were seen searching under cars in the garage for the weapon and a phone which was thrown out the window. The phone was retrieved and officers were given the serial number of the still missing gun.
Missouri Highway Patrol, KCPD and UMKC Police blocked the second floor of the garage for around one hour while searching the vehicle.
No UMKC students were involved in the incident.
Police on the scene declined to comment.
