UMKC’s historic Epperson House is getting an eye-catching makeover into a 14-room boutique hotel.
The rumored “haunted” building has been empty for a decade and was formerly a space for dorms and classrooms.
The university has been actively searching for ways to utilize this 54-room mansion and proposed restoration in November 2023.
“In addition to turning a long vacant on-campus property into an operating business, the Epperson House will include a community event space, cafe, and restaurant that we anticipate being frequented by students, faculty, staff and the general community,” said Mark Moberly, partner of Sunflower Development Group.
With the new streetcar stop opening soon, the hotel will add more housing options for campus visitors.
“It will provide an opportunity for parents who’ve come to visit their kids at orientation or watch a soccer game,” said Chris Wolff, assistant director of the UMKC bookstore and haunted campus tour guide. “Our students are going to have a renewed sense of pride in the Epperson House because it’s finally being taken care of, and it’s not in threat of being torn down.”
The start of construction on the house has not been confirmed, nor has the anticipated street closures.
“Construction start date is unknown, but it will be at least a year from now while the developer team puts together our development plan, and pursues state and federal historic tax credits,” said Moberly.
The haunted history of the house may add character to the hotel and could appeal to paranormal fanatics.
“Whether or not there’s actually ghosts inside that are going to scare the guests, I’m on the fence,” said Wolff. “I’ve heard many, many stories from people that I trust, and they would not think they were just making it up about stuff they’ve seen and experienced in that house.”
