Kansas City established itself as a golf powerhouse winning back-to-back Summit League Championships.
From April 28-30, the Roos took on the three-day event in Sellersburg, Indiana. By the end, sophomore Mesa Falleur was holding both the team championship and championship MVP trophies.
Head coach J.W. VanDenBorn was very proud of his team’s performance.
“Any time you get to win a conference championship, it’s special,” said VanDenBorn. “To represent our conference at the NCAA tournament with this group of guys and see what they’re capable of doing at that level, it’s very special.”
After the first day, Kansas City held a two-shot lead shooting 273 in total, 15 under par.
Falleur ended the day tied for second place with a -5. Senior Maxince Mugnier placed fifth with a -4, while sophomore Lucas Dutartre and junior Max Cooper were part of a six-way tie for seventh at -3.
On the second day, KC slid down to third place at 10 under par.
Falleur was still sitting tied for second, shooting only -1 in the second round. Dutartre and Cooper tied for 10th place, while Mugnier dropped to a tie for 18th.
On the final day, the team secured the win, finishing the final 18 holes 17 under par. Over all 54 holes, the team finished an astounding 31 under par, securing the team first place and its second-straight tournament win.
Mesa Falleur finished the tournament -11 overall, earning him first place and Championship MVP.
He reflected on what drove him this season.
“My teammate Josh [Robards] won and I was a little bit jealous,” Falleur said. “It gave me a lot of fuel for this year… I can’t wait to go compete at regionals.”
Six golfers, including Dutartre and Cooper from KC, finished in a tie for third at -7.
Falleur, Dutartre and Cooper all earned All-Tournament Team honors.
Falleur had earned First Team All-Summit League on April 26, while Dutartre earned Second Team, and Cooper earned an Honorable Mention.
Kansas City will head to Austin, Texas to compete in the Austin Regional of the NCAA Regional round.
This marks the seventh time the Roos have competed in the NCAA Regionals. Coach VanDenBorn has led all of those teams.
Should Kansas City qualify for the National Championship, it will be the first time in school history.
The Roos will play as the 13th seed in the round beginning on May 13.
