UMKC Students Can Help Union Station Shooting Victims

  Tragedy struck the Kansas City metro on Wednesday afternoon when gunfire broke out at Union Station.

  As of Thursday evening, , 22 people were injured and one was confirmed dead. There are several ways UMKC students can help after this event.

  • UMKC Honors Program Blood Drive

  Tomorrow, Feb. 16, the UMKC Honors Program is hosting a blood drive in Pierson Auditorium. The event runs from 9 a.m. through 3 p.m. Registration is open on RooGroups.

 The Community Blood Center aids local hospitals by supplying blood, platelet, and plasma units. One blood donation can potentially save three lives in the Kansas City community.

  “University of Kansas Medical Center, University Health, and Saint Luke’s Hospital all received additional blood products yesterday to assist in the treatment of the shooting victims. CBC stands ready to send additional blood products if needed” blood center spokesperson Chelsey Smith told The Kansas City Star. 

  The Community Blood Center recommends staying hydrated and eating before donating.

  • Arrowhead Live’s “Kansas City Strong” Merchandise

  The X pages, Arrowhead Live and Braiden Turner have created “Kansas City Strong”  merchandise, including t-shirts and sweatshirts.  100% of the proceeds will go to the victims of the shooting. The merchandise can be found here.

  • rOOTS KC Fundraiser

  From Feb. 16 to Feb. 18, 10% of sales will go to supporting the family of Lisa Lopez. Lopez was the victim confirmed deceased. More details can be found at this Instagram post.

  • KC Pioneers Tech Drive

  Sam Kulikov of KC’s professional E-Sports team, the KC Pioneers, is organizing an effort to donate technology to “bring more joy to the kids recovering at Children’s Mercy.” More information can be found here.
