Kansas City’s women’s soccer team fell to the Drake Bulldogs on Friday in a tough 2-0 loss.
For the first 45 minutes of play, Drake’s stout defense kept the Roos stifled while Kansas City did an excellent job on the defensive side of the ball
Roos sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Caldwell had a key save, bringing her saves to 40 on the season. Many defenders, including freshman midfielder Kayda Kamolz, stopped Drake from attempting any scoring opportunities.
However, the team’s second-half play was dreadful.
It all started after the 50th minute. A free kick by Drake’s junior midfielder Delaney Goertzen led to a header by forward Emma Nagel. At 0-1, the Roos had the chance to keep the score close.
Kansas City ended their own chances of a comeback after a disappointing own goal stretched Drake’s lead to the final 2-0.
While the defense had its ups and downs, the offense was stagnant throughout the game. The Roos managed a mere seven total shots, with two shots on target. Both of those shots came from freshman striker Meghan White.
Kansas City’s overall inconsistency, plus their lifeless offense, has equaled a hideous start. In nine games, they have scored a lackluster eight goals. Meanwhile, the defense has allowed 23 goals and 18.7 shots per game.
With another loss to Northern Iowa on Sunday, the Roos’ 2-8 start is only the beginning of a long, dreadful season. If the team wants to bounce back, coach Jess Smith must make some crucial changes to the starting lineup.
In addition, Smith’s team must show more aggression and playmaking abilities. With only nine assists, the forwards and midfielders need to create more opportunities for each other.
