AI systems have proven themselves to have a net-negative impact on society.
Artificial Intelligence Systems have led to a disruption in certain institutions and have a capability of spreading misinformation and convincing hoaxes.
Sam Altman has created an AI video system, Sora 2, which has the potential to fabricate criminal actions. A writing institution, National Novel Writing Month was shut down after deciding to partner with AI “writing” software, and the internet has become cluttered with a metric ton of AI generated slop images.
Several instances of religious psychosis have been triggered by repeated AI usage because people are too stupid to recognize that it’s only telling them what they want to hear.
Forbes released an article that details how AI has made people dumber through repeated use. They cite an MIT study, which found that repeated use of it for tasks dulls our ability for self-thought and reasoning skills.
I flatly reject the idea of using AI in an academic setting for multiple reasons.
In 2023, for a class, we had to use Google’s Gemini image generator to create images of a monster. This was an assignment that we could not skip or oppose on ethical grounds; we simply had to do it and write nonsense around the thing we “created” in Gemini. I place the word in scare quotes because what we did was not an act of conscious creation, but generation.
We made a computer produce an image based on an amalgamation of other images it had processed. Google states that these images were not stolen from existing artists, but I find such a claim to be incredibly dubious.
I’ve also witnessed multiple instances of peers admitting to the use of ChatGPT as a way in which they’ve gotten through classes that they don’t like. In this action, they are not outliers; there have been multiple instances of students across the world graduating and bragging that they used AI language learning models like ChatGPT to pass their classes.
Any kind of feeling of worth that might have otherwise been caused by passing or failing a class by their own merit has been dissolved.
I have made the case against AI clear; not only does it spread misinformation, but it also turns people into morons who seemingly cannot function without it. It has been a stain on humanity for the last couple of years that it has been around, and one can only hope that the bubble bursts and everyone involved in its proliferation loses their money.
