UMKC Union Programming Board’s “Bunnies & Boba” event drew hundreds of students to the University walkway.
According to Grace Yu, UPB Roos in the City Coordinator and senior studying accounting and analytics, so many students showed up for the event held on Aug. 31 that there were too many for her to keep track of.
“There were 187 checked in on RooGroups, so there were at least 200 attendees,” Yu said.
The event was organized by UPB After Hours coordinator, student Navi Kaur, a junior double majoring in Computer Science and Business. Kaur said she planned the event because she wanted to do something creative to bring students together.
“I created this event because I knew boba was a hit amongst students,” Kaur said. “I wanted to do something creative and unique, so I started brainstorming words that started with the letter ‘B. I figured bunnies would be a great addition to the event!”
The event featured a pen set up with live bunnies from Paramount Pony that students could enter and interact with. There was also a boba stand from Dragonfly Tea providing milk tea drinks. Many students came out to pet the bunnies, take photos and enjoy bubble tea.
“The event went really well, and there was a much larger turnout than anticipated!” Kaur said.
The crowd was so large that students lined up 30 minutes before the event started and UPB ran out of boba drinks within minutes of the event starting. However, Kaur believes the event was a major success overall.
“I was really happy with the event because it encouraged student engagement on campus. It was the most students I had seen on campus this year so far, and I would like to help make it a regular occurrence,” Kaur said. “We were able to work with vendors in the community, which is always great given that UMKC, is in the city.”
