So far, Kansas City has had a solid season with a 6-1 record. The Lady Roos faced Drake in a double-header during the weekend. This Saturday’s matchup turned out to be a win in both games for the Roos.
The first game was largely a pitching duel, especially early on. There were obvious errors by both teams. Kansas City broke the stalemate in the bottom of the fourth inning, with three hits and three runs. Roos sophomore catcher, Faith Denning, hit a home run that was a part of a five-run explosion. Thanks to this offensive effort, the Roos were able to put the game to rest early, winning the game 8-0.
As quick as the first game was, the second one would be entirely different. Camryn Stickel was the starting pitcher for Kansas City. By the end of three innings, the game was tied at 3-3. Like the first game, there was sloppy play by both teams defensively.
Drake was up by a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Roos stole second base and hit a triple, but were only able to tie the game.
Extra innings ensued. Both teams were unable to break the logjam until the bottom of the twelfth inning, when a lead-off triple by Kansas City and a costly error by the Drake Bulldogs allowed the winning run to score.
The Lady Roos had a total of fourteen hits for the two games. Drake had a combined seven total errors in both games.
Coach Kerry Shaw was pleased by his team’s overall performance and wanted the team to focus on the tough road ahead in their schedule.
“Even though we didn’t hit that well in game two, we had a clutch hit in the bottom of the seventh with our backs against the wall trailing by a run,” Shaw said. “From here out on our schedule gets really tough, and it will be quite the test of how solid a team we can be the rest of the season.”
Kansas City will resume play at the 2021 Red Raider Invite in Lubbock, Texas, in early March.
