UMKC police alerted students that a woman was robbed at gunpoint in the Education Building early Friday morning.
Police stated that the incident occurred around 4:40 a.m. and the suspect was an armed male wearing all black with a face mask and wielded a black pistol.
“As a woman who often travels between places alone, including on campus, it’s always really scary to hear about something like that, especially in a campus building” said UMKC ADA Coordinator and alumni Bea Bohrer.
Student safety concerns on campus have increased this past year with the passing of Yuxi Wu, a graduate student who was fatally hit by a car at 51st Street and Troost, as well as various crimes at the Country Club Plaza.
“I work at the library and I get off late at night–I get off at 12 a.m. and I’m walking late at night, so it does make me a little nervous,” said freshman history major Neb Cockrell. “It makes me sad… getting robbed isn’t great.”
Other students are concerned with how the suspect was able to get into the building in the first place.
“I question the safety of buildings that are farther away from the police stations, because the Education Building is kind of far away. It really makes you question who can access those buildings.” Said sophomore psychology and criminal justice major Camille Fry.
