Kansas City women’s basketball season is here. Junior guard Alayna Contreras was a major part of the team’s success last season and will return to the court for the Roos in 2024.
Contreras transferred to UMKC in fall 2023 from Cochise College where she also played basketball.
She didn’t always love basketball, but grew to love it as she continued playing.
“My dad was a basketball coach and growing up with basketball being his life it fell upon me.” Said Contreras.
Contreras went from a community college onto a Division 1 team. Despite the change, she found it was easier to adjust than she expected.
Expressions have also surfaced on how her coaches made her transfer easy which made her feel comfortable, giving her a warm welcome and allowing her to adjust to UMKC.
When Contreras is on the court playing with her team, she makes it a mission to score every game. She enjoys scoring points and being there for her team.
“I’m really starting to accept my role as a scorer,” said Contreras.“I can’t win without my team, I have a role where I have to score every game, but I can’t do it without them.”
Having the ball in the last seconds and scoring during every game is her goal for this season. She loves and cares for her team, and she appreciates playing with them.
“The guards around us push us every day,” Contreras said. “We’re definitely improving from last year.”
Contreras has high hopes for the upcoming season. The Roos are currently 2-3 and play again on Friday, Nov. 22 against Lindenwood.
