Members of the Student Government Association (SGA) are not just students–they are changemakers, balancing multiple leadership roles while driving initiatives that improve campus life.
Alex Unseth is a senior at the Bloch School who saw a need for the voices of dorm residents last year and decided to run for senator. After his term, Unseth successfully ran for the executive board where he currently serves as the director of internal affairs.
“To those who may hesitate to join SGA because they think it may be too professional or serious, or that they might not be able to make change, I would say that true change comes from someone who acts upon it,” Unseth said.
One of Unseth’s biggest goals in SGA has been to continue building partnerships and strong relationships between different committees and campus groups.
“I’ve tried to establish a better type of relationship between the Senate and the executive board. So, I regularly meet with senators during office hours,” said Unseth. “Change can be what you make it, even if that sounds cheesy or cliche.”
Among those with high hopes and innovative ideas to join the executive board is Jazmin Romo, a junior at the Bloch School.
Romo was elected this year to serve as press secretary, though her history as an SGA member began when she was a freshman. She started her journey on the first year council and later became a senator.
“I’m interested in going into a sports market after graduation and that’s why I wanted to do marketing for SGA, because I still wanted to be involved, but I just wanted a position that was gonna help me grow my skills,” said Romo.
As press secretary, Romo juggles that role as well as writing SGA’s newsletter, running the social media accounts and keeping students up to date on what is happening around campus.
Romo feels strongly about student engagement and urges more people to get involved in SGA.
“I want more people to be aware that those [Senate positions] exist, and if somebody who is really interested in making a change for their school, or wanting to be an at-large senator, they should know that those options are available,” said Romo.
Students interested in SGA are encouraged to attend any of the senate meetings that take place bi-weekly on Mondays at 6 p.m. on the third floor of the Student Union.
