Various local news stations attended the MSOC/BlaqueKC pop-up for National Voter Registration Day at the University Walkway.
Nathan Brennan, anchor and reporter at KCTV5, went live on the walkway around noon with videographer Dwaine Crispell shooting the live shot.
“I had to find the information that’s important to people, and then at the same time prepare for what the live shot could entail and what you could see in that live shot,” said Brennan. “A lot of what I did today was kind of focusing on what people need to know.”
Charlie Keegan, reporter at KSHB 41, was also seen preparing to go on air along with many other camera operators filming shots of the event.
Students were immersed in the fun atmosphere while being offered free pizza and ice cream, as well as easy access to voter registration.
“I didn’t expect it to be like that at all. It felt like a party, which I think is very impressive for a college campus,” said Brennan. “It was awesome to see young people getting involved and making sure that it was kind of that welcoming atmosphere.”
The entire process was simple: walk through the quad on the way to class, stop at a table to quickly fill out the registration paperwork, grab some food then continue heading to class.
Professor and Media Lab Director Joshua Jackson brought out his broadcasting class to witness the live coverage of the event.
“I was thinking to myself, this is a really good idea. The students can get a chance to see firsthand what it looks like to do a live VOSOT.” Said Jackson. “They got an opportunity to talk with Dwaine Crispell and Nathan Brennan, both are very seasoned in the industry.”
You can register to vote here.
“We’re all in this together. We’re all working together. No matter which way you lean politically, it is your right as an American, it is your right to vote nationally and also vote for these local elections,” said Brennan.
The last day to register to vote in Missouri is Oct. 9.
