Coming off an amazing season, the Kansas City Roos were ranked fifth overall in the preseason rankings for the 2024 Women’s Volleyball Summit League.
Kansas City finished last season with a 22-9 record and became regular season conference champions.
Head coach Christi Posey believes that the preseason rankings are nothing but fuel to the fire. Posey said she knows what her team is capable of and that these rankings have never stopped them before.
“The most important thing for our kids to understand, it’s not where you are at the beginning, it’s where you are at the end,” said Posey.
Junior defensive specialist Blair Taylor was a bit surprised with the rankings but doesn’t believe it is a reflection of what the team accomplished last season. Taylor also points out that these rankings are not on the team’s mind.
“We know what we are capable of,” said Taylor. “We are more than excited to get to go out and prove that to everyone.”
After such a successful season last year, Taylor and the team know how effective a winning culture can be. They plan to transfer that into this season.
“Now that we know what that looks like, that’s what we are holding ourselves to this year,” said Taylor. “We’re trying to achieve the same thing.”
Along with the rankings, the Roos schedule was released. Posey thinks that their schedule will bring some positive experience for the whole team.
“I liked our schedule,” said Posey. “I thought we did it right by trying to get a pretty good balance.”
Each year, the team is filled with returning players, transfers and new incoming freshmen. This gives the more experienced players an opportunity to teach their craft and experiences to others.
Taylor knows what it is like to be an underclassman, so she has some pointers for them.
“Take ownership of your place on this team,” she said. “Everyone has a voice no matter what year you are.”
Every team has their own expectations each year, the main expectation Posey has for her team is to give it all on the court.
“It’s always important to me that we maximize our abilities and play with the talent we have,” said Posey.
The Roos are gearing up for another exciting season, all home games are played right here on campus at the Swinney Center.
