Family Weekend, from Sept. 20 to 22, is quickly approaching and students have differing opinions about attending.
There are many events including a haunted tour, game night, scavenger hunt, a Family Weekend tailgate, UMKC night at Starlight and more.
Some students who live on campus are excited, but some commuter students don’t plan on taking part in the festivities.
Junior and commuter student Jack Turner didn’t have any interest in Family Weekend.
“Partially, I didn’t know,” said Turner when asked about the event. “I don’t see myself bringing my family to college.”
Turner expressed that he is bringing his family to a different event hosted by the fraternity he pledged to. He linked his disinterest to not feeling connected to the campus.
“Maybe I don’t feel enough university pride,” explained Turner.
Senior Grace Miller also expressed disinterest in the event.
“I live with my family,” said Miller. “I feel like that’s why I am not involved on campus with events like this.”
Miller is also a commuter student, and said she didn’t know it was an event offered on campus. After learning about the events, Miller and Turner both said they may attend but are not committed.
Although some expressed disinterest, over 400 students are already registered to attend Family Weekend on Roo Groups, including freshman Katelyn Bell.
Bell is attending the event with her mom, dad and brother. Bell learned about it through her mom who received an email and then decided to participate.
“I am most excited about the soccer game,” says Bell. She added that she is looking forward to spending time with family and showing them around campus.
