Kansas City women’s soccer has started the season off hot. On Sept. 5, the team got the chance to play a familiar foe.
After a weather delay that lasted an hour and a half, the Kansas City Roos and Missouri State Bears were ready to get out and play.
The two ultimately ended with a 0-0 draw. This game gives them the best start to a season since 2019.
The Bears attacked early, but the Roos defense held firm. It wasn’t long before Kansas City countered, constantly pressing deep downfield into the Bear’s territory.
As the game progressed, things intensified with both sides drawing fouls repeatedly, and the physicality of the game escalated . The Roos excelled on defense, not allowing a single shot on goal by the end of the half. At halftime, KC had five shots, while Missouri State had no shots on goal.
After a brief halftime break, the fight was more evenly matched in the second half, with both teams launching offensive strikes.
The key player for the Roos defense was senior goalkeeper Riley Moore, who had three impressive saves by the end of the game. She charged ahead to block one kick when sophomore Reilly Heman from the Bears broke through the defenses. She also protected the goal twice more from a chaotic goal box scuffle.
As the clock ran out both teams were tired and battered after a long-fought defensive battle. With a total of 25 fouls, 11 from the Bears and 14 from the Roos, the tie was hard-earned.
The Roos record moves to 3-0-3, continuing their undefeated season. The Roos now set their sights on Tulsa, who they take on at home on Sunday, Sept. 8.
