In stark contrast to the 2023 season, the Kansas City Roos women’s soccer team remains undefeated with a record of 2-0-2.
On Aug. 15, the Roos played Saint Louis. The Billikens were ranked 12th in the United Soccer Coaches poll going into the game. In a 72-minute match, shortened due to weather, the Roos pulled off a scoreless draw. This was Kansas City’s first ranked result in team history.
“The Roos are playing the Kansas City way,” said head coach Jess Smith. “They leave it all out on the field. Grit is our core value. These have been gritty performances.”
After playing Saint Louis, the Roos played Marquette in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Kansas City struck first with a goal by sophomore forward Ashley Koch just before halftime. Only seconds before the game ended, the Golden Eagles found the back of the net to tie the game.
In the home opener against Emporia State, a rising star made her presence known. The freshman forward from Lee’s Summit, Adriana Benassi scored both goals in the game, helping secure Kansas City’s first win of the season.
Most recently, the Roos took another trip down I-70 to St. Charles, Missouri, and faced off against the Lindenwood Lions. With goals scored by redshirt junior forward Madison Page, graduate defender Sophia Limongi and graduate forward Lily Hollis, the Roos won a 3-0 victory.
In the first week of the season, both Summit League Weekly Honors were claimed by Roos. Koch claimed Offensive Peak Performer of the Week, meanwhile Defensive Peak Performer of the Week was given to redshirt freshman goalkeeper Maddie Sibbing.
“Our team is relentless,” said Smith. “We always have a chance. We’re fortunate to be in a position where we haven’t gone down yet. We’ve led in all the games. But there’s always a hope and ability to keep going.”
