After a disappointing 13 wins and 34 losses in the 2022 season, the Kansas City Roos softball team looks to bounce back after an exciting offseason. 

  The 2022 season ended with Head Coach Kerry Shaw and Kansas City parting ways after three years at the helm. 

  Last season, Kansas City struggled with every aspect of the game, most notably their plate performance. The Roos excelled in only two areas when it came to batting; stolen base attempts and strikeouts. They managed to steal 86% of their bases (43-50) and protected the plate while at-bat, only allowing 250 strikeouts.

  Kiki Stokes O’Connor, a Kansas City native with NCAA tournament experience, signed on as Shaw’s successor after a successful campaign at Upper Iowa University. Joining O’Connor’s staff is Kelsey Aikey, Rylee Bayless and Dejah Mulipola. 

  “Coach O’Connor brings a new energy to this team,” said junior pitcher Camryn Stickel. “Her commitment and determination to better this team is something that has really resonated with all of us. She has helped us set new standards for who UMKC softball is and what we stand for.”

  With the addition of O’Connor comes the arrival of a new squad. The Roos made some significant signs this offseason by signing eight freshmen and getting three transfers. Sophomore infielder Amelia Fitzgerald transferred from Upper Iowa University and has already played under the newly-acquired coach.

  The biggest takeaway from the incoming class is how Kansas City is prioritizing the infield. Eight out of the 11 signees were infielders. 

  After an offseason of tumultuous change, there is a lot of excitement surrounding this softball program. Their first game of the season is Feb. 10 against Georgia State at the Felsberg Invitational in Miami, Florida.
