The Kansas City Roos lose to the Saint Louis Billikens 0-5 after making multiple mistakes on defense. The game started with a defensive duel, as neither team could get anything going on offense. From time to time, the Roos attempted to make a push for a goal, but Saint Louis’ stifling defense stayed put. By the 28th minute, the Billikens pushed a heavy counter-attack, but mid-fielder Lily Hollis made a critical slide that killed their opponent’s momentum.

Saint Louis continued its aggressive tactics before halftime, but Sophie Limongi had a chase-down tackle that prevented a scoring opportunity.

The first 45 minutes looked promising, but everything went downhill once the second half started. In the 46th minute, a cross-shot by Saint Louis led to an erratic kick by Limongi. Even though sophomore goalie Riley Moore had the opportunity to notch a save, the ball sailed to the left corner, leading to a rare own goal.

Seven minutes later, a foul inside the penalty box led to a Billiken penalty kick attempt. However, the team scored on a rebound. Not even a minute after, an average corner kick led to another score by Saint Louis. Within ten minutes, UMKC allowed three goals.

While things settled for over twenty minutes, Kansas City forward Emma Bryne allowed a handball inside the penalty box at the 77th-minute mark. Saint Louis scored on another penalty kick.

During the 80th minute, Moore made a tremendous save that, unfortunately, led to yet another rebound score by the Billikens.

By the 90th minute, the Roos could not make up for their endless amount of errors. Kansas City was kept in check offensively, only attempting two shots with one shot on goal.

Even though she had a shaky performance, goalkeeper Riley Moore had her second five-save game this season. She looks to be a key contributor to the Roos in the future.

When asked about what she learned from their battle with Saint Louis, head coach Jess Smith said, “What we will learn from this is just the little details and battling through the entire match.”

Kansas City will keep their heads high as they head down south to face Texas State this upcoming Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
