Meet the UMKC grad running for City Councilman

Lauren Anderson

UMKC’s very own Austin Strassle is running for 4th District councilman at-large in the 2019 City Council elections.

The 4th District includes UMKC Volker campus, so students who are registered in Kansas City can possibly vote in this race next year.

A native to the Kansas City area, Strassle attended UMKC from 2012-2016. He graduated with a B.A. in Urban Studies and Affairs.

In 2016, Strassle spent his last year in school as a research and policy intern at the Kauffman Center. He holds a position at Truman Medical Center as a mental health caseworker.

Strassle’s platform takes a progressive stance by pushing to improve early childhood education, housing costs, overall economic equality and equal opportunities for all residents throughout the metropolitan area.

“Addressing inequality is by far the biggest issue facing Kansas City right now… One of the biggest barriers I see preventing us from having intentional conversations about how to address inequality is the influence of corporate money in politics,” Strassle said.

The aftermath of the 2016 presidential election inspired Strassle to enter the world of politics.

“The presidential elections were over and I, like many of those around me, were incredibly anxious about what was going to happen under the next administration,” Strassle said. “I remember listening to President Obama’s farewell speech where he said it was up to each of us to put in the work to solve the problems facing our communities.”

At just 24, Strassle is the youngest candidate running for office in Kansas City, and he wishes to show other young adults that we too have a strong voice that can be used to inflict change.

“Part of my goal with this campaign is to show other millennials that we do have a voice, and that it’s important to engage in local politics just as much as it is federal.”

City Council elections for Kansas City will be in April 2019. Information regarding Austin Strassle’s vision as a future councilman for Kansas City can be found on his website
