The softball team improved to 17-20 (5-7 in Summit League play) by taking two out of three games against league rival South Dakota State in Brookings, S.D. last weekend.
The Roos took the series with a 12-1 victory Saturday over of the Jackrabbits (8-19-1, 3-9) in a game ended after six innings by virtue of the mercy rule.
The Roos got off to a 3-0 lead Saturday in the first two innings, increased their lead to 5-1 in the third and piled on seven more runs in the fifth and six innings.
Senior Kaelene Curry led the Roos as she went three for four, drove in two runs and scored once. Freshman Caitlin Christopher continued her hot streak, going two for four. Senior Chelsea Hartwig went two for three, drove in two runs and scored twice.
Junior Deanna Friese, making her second start in the series, struck out six while improving her record to 8-10.
They Roos stormed to a 9-1 victory in Friday morning’ first game of a doubleheader.
After three scoreless innings, the Roos took a 1-0 lead in the fourth. The Jackrabbits tied thescore in the fifth before the Roos took command. They scored three runs in the sixth inning, and five in the final inning.
Christopher went three for four and scored twice. Junior Emily Ott went two for four and scored twice while senior Megan Ussary also scored twice. Senior Megan Vicino drove in three runs.
Friese struck out 10 Jackrabbits and gave up just one hit.
The Roos managed just three hits In the nightcap, losing 4-0. South Dakota State took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on catcher Morgan McGabe’s run-scoring double. In the sixth inning, the hosts stretched their lead to 4-0 as outfielder Krista Honken doubled and infielder Kelly Kleppin drove home Sammy Bingham.
For the Roos, senior Kelly Fischer went two for three. Cinda Ramos (8-9) struck out four Jackrabbits.The Roos will be host IUPUI in a three-game Summit League series at the Missouri 3&2 Field in Kansas City on April 14-15.
