The Roos’ softball team lost twice to Brigham Young University during a challenging stretch of seven games over five days during spring break. The Roos, falling to 14-18 (3-6 in Summit League), split two games with Utah Valley and lost two out of three games to Southern Utah.
UMKC vs. BYU
Tuesday’s games against the BYU Cougars resulted in 8-2 and 16-1 losses. The Cougars scored five runs in the first inning, and the Roos never seriously threatened. But the Cougars were just getting started, totaling 14 hits in the second game. The onslaught featured a gram slam home run from Megan Arnold. UMKC vs. Utah Valley
The next day in Orem, Utah, the Roos split a double header. The Roos won the first game 9-8.The Roos jumped to a 5-0 lead in the second inning while knocking out 13 hits.. Seniors Kelly Fischer, Kaelene Curry and Megan Vicino each had two hits and scored two runs.
The Roos lost the second game despite scoring seven runs off eight hits. UMKC vs. Southern Utah
In Friday’s Summit League games in Cedar Valley, the Roos split another double header with the Thunderbirds. The Roos won the opener 5-2. Ott and Ussary scored two runs each, while Sokolik scored once. The Thunderbirds won the second game 5-3, while scoring in four of six innings. Senior Chelsea Hartwig went 2-for-2, while freshman catcher Caitlin Christopher went 2-for-3.
In Saturday’s game, the Roos lost 9-6 as the Thunderbirds totaled 14 hits. Trailing 7-1 in the sixth inning, the Roos narrowed the gap to 7-6. The ‘Birds added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.
The Blue & Gold will play Missouri State in Kansas City on April 3 before returning to Summit League play against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits in a three-game series in Brookings, S.D. on April 6-7.
