Adele made her triumphant return to the limelight with the release of her new single, “Easy On Me.” The songstress is accompanied by a single piano and still manages to deliver a seismic vocal performance in typical Adele fashion.
Within less than 24 hours of the release of “Easy On Me,” the track broke the Spotify record for the most streams in history, with over 19.7 million streams. The single is also projected to have a historic debut at the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100.
Predictably, the track is a ballad, but Adele’s sheer vocal talent manages to carry the single as she digs into a vocal diamond mine and continuously throws up gems. For a once-in-a-generation artist as talented as Adele, all she needs is a simple piano chord to deliver a performance that can run laps around half of the music industry.
The pre-chorus builds tension as the piano intensifies, singing, “I know there is hope in these waters, but I can’t bring myself to swim when I am drowning. In this silence, baby let me in.”
This tension abruptly breaks away for the singer to muster out a powerful falsetto in the chorus belting out, “Go easy on me, baby, I was just a child. I didn’t get the chance to feel the world around me. I had no time to choose what I chose to do, so go easy on me.”
This track encapsulates the thought process in Adele’s mind as she juggled the trials and tribulations that came along with marriage and fame, and what ultimately led to her divorce this past year with her now ex-husband, Simon Konecki.
When asked about what her next album and single will entail, Adele simply said “ “Divorce babe, divorce,” on her Instagram live.
The accompanying music video that dropped along with the single shows Adele picking up where she left off in 2015 with her last lead single, “Hello.” The completely black and white video shows Adele packing up her belongings into an old beat-up Chevy truck, signifying the departure from her last marriage and the beginning of a new chapter in her life. The video suddenly blooms into color with rich tones of maroon and brown as Adele finds herself in a new house with sheet music flying around her.
Adele has had a drastic six-year hiatus from the eyes of the public since the release of her groundbreaking album, “25.” Her previous record became the fastest-selling album of the 21st century and eventually nabbed her six Grammy Awards, making her one of the few women in history to win in all three major categories at the ceremony: album, record and song of the year.
This hiatus will be broken with her newest album, titled “30,” slated for release on Nov. 19.
“I feel like this album is self-destruction,” Adele said in an interview with Vogue. “Then self-reflection and then sort of self-redemption. But I feel ready. I really want people to hear my side of the story this time.”
