The Roos took on Albany this past Friday and came out on top, winning three of the four sets.

Roos outside hitter Odyssey Warren set a career high of 19 kills, and the team managed to hit .364 which is the highest single game hitting percentage since 2019.

Set One

The first set started off slow, with the Roos dropping the first 2 points of the game. Then Kennedy Schritenthal began serving and the team rallied to score six straight points.

The set continued with no team gaining an edge until it was tied at 12-12. Carly Gillen knew what needed to be done and sent over a kill which started the Roos on an 8-2 run.

De’Janae Arnold had her fifth kill which gave the team the advantage to win the first set 25-17.

The Roos totalled 13 kills in the first set.

Set Two

In the second set, the team faced some challenges.

The Great Danes were serving hard shots with lots of strong moves. Kansas City played hard, with a crucial block by Warren and Arnold that brought the 21-20 set within the Roos’ reach.

However, the Roos were not able to keep up and Albany was able to steal set two 25-21.

The Roos did put up a solid 17 kills in the second set despite the loss.

Set Three

Early in the third set, it was hard to tell who was going to succeed as both teams struggled to take a lead.

The standstill came to an end when libero Maddie Renn swung the momentum with an ace, giving the Roos a 9-8 lead.

The team continued to progress with a kill by Melanie Brecka, increasing Kansas City’s lead to 18-15. Brecka sent over four kills on eight attacks in set three with zero errors.

The set came to an end when Gillen showed up with her fifth kill of the game, and the Roos won 25-21.

The Roos had 14 kills in this set.

Set Four

Arnold started off the game hot with back-to-back kills which put the team up 6-3 early in set 4.

Transfer hitter Bree Thompson also came up big, landing her second career kill with the Roos and boosting Kansas City’s score 10-6.

Not giving Albany the chance to make a comeback, Warren and Arnold went in with a timely block and kept the Roos up 23-17.

The Great Danes took advantage of a timeout, in hopes of coming back out to win. However, when they came back out, they stumbled across an error.

Thompson then sent over another kill to close out the match with a 25-18 fourth set.

The Roos had another 14 kills in the final set.

Final

The Roos were victorious in a 3-1 win over the University of Albany. Kansas City will travel to Fargo, North Dakota to take on North Dakota State on Sept. 23.
