Briefly Mentioned: Professor co-chairs conference

The first Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas Women in Computing (MINKWIC) conference will be held on Oct. 7-8 at the Embassy Suites near the Country Club Plaza.

School of Computing and Engineering Associate Teaching Professor Judy Mullins and Northwest Missouri State University Associate Professor of Computer Science and Information Systems Carol Spradling will co-chair the event, which focuses on the national decline of women who choose computer science as a profession.

Already sold out, the conference will begin on Friday and continue until Saturday afternoon. A career fair featuring 14 companies and four graduate schools will take place after the conference as well.

“This is a unique opportunity for young women in computing to meet and socialize informally with successful technical women from industry, academia and government,” Mullins said.

The conference’s sessions will focus on women’s issues, concerning challenges and rewards of computing careers in in computing and technology with broader representation of women.

Furthermore, the conference provides a forum for women interested in sharing ideas and solutions at a comparatively lower price than similar conferences.

“The goal of the Missouri Iowa Nebraska Kansas Celebration of Women in Computing is to provide a low-cost, small conference for women in computing who cannot afford to attend such major conferences as the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing,” Mullins said.

Attendees will be given the opportunity to listen to representatives from Microsoft, Google, IBM, Cerner, Garmin, Monsanto, Hewlett-Packard, Booz Allen Hamilton and Principal Financial speak about ways to address the issues of women in computer science. Students can also present their research.

“Students who attend will benefit from hearing talks by top-level researchers and industry professionals whose stories will inspire and motivate,” Mullins said.
