A college student’s guide to an affordable night out

Most college students live on restricted budgets that make the thought of going out with friends almost appalling. However, this KC has a few secrets that can make maintaining a social life just a touch easier on your wallet. There are hundreds of restaurants in Kansas City, and countless happy hours to go around. Here are a few places with great food and drinks at even better prices.

Rockstar Burgers in the West Bottoms offers low prices 24-hours a day, for both alcohol and food. It’s open and available during events in that area like Boulevardia and First Weekends, while being especially convenient for early birds.

Mission Taco in the CrossRoads has its normal happy hour from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., as well as an additional hour from 10 p.m. to close (times vary). This late night happy hour’s main feature is the very popular and convenient $2 tacos and $2 tequila shots.

Since this location is down the street from places like Up Down and Crossroads Arts District, in the heart of First Friday’s, Mission Taco is a great place to prolong late night excitement.

Nara in the Crossroads is another popular stop on the food train. It can seem intimidating by the restaurants more upscale demeanor and a bit pricey, but their multiple happy hours make it a lot easier to bear.

Not only does Nara feature a traditional 3-6 p.m. happy hour, it also hosts a lady’s night on Wednesday from 3 p.m. to close, as well as a reverse happy hour from 10 p.m. to close. Most food off the menus ranges from $4-5 and drinks can go from $3.50 to $7.

Food is all well and good, but there’s nothing like a stiff drink after a day packed with classes. Anyone over the legal age can agree that some of the following hot spots are fantastic choices. Affäre in the Crossroads carries free wine tasting on Wednesdays as well as half-priced bottles. El Pueblito has two for one margaritas and sangria from 3-7 p.m. and 10 p.m. to midnight.

Jax’s Fish House and Oyster Bar has $5 cocktails and $1.50 oysters.

These are only a few of the pretty sweet deals going on around town. The Screenland Armour in North KC has a fully-functioning movie theatre with arcade games and completely stocked bar. Aside from the mega awesome concept of these things combined, Screenland also has student specials allowing for $5 tickets Monday through Thursday.

Up Down is another story in itself. This arcade bar, a treasure to party-going locals, has specials every single day and they change constantly. Monday, for example, is one dollar off all drafts, whereas Wednesday features $3 16-ounce domestic cans.

The savings are endless as the fun times roll; there is not a moment in the foreseeable future where Kansas Citians will stop. These deals can help you have fun without breaking the bank and are all accessible through the KC Metro system.

Welcome to Kansas City, we hope you enjoy the ride.
