What gay bars do you recommend in Kansas City?

Dear tourist,

My recommendation of gay bars depends on your setting preference. Some people prefer a high-energy bar with drag queens, while others prefer a smaller, more intimate sports bar. Whichever the case, I believe Kansas City satisfies all needs.

The high-energy, well-known gay club is Missie B’s. This multi-level extravaganza has several bars, each with its own atmosphere. On the first level, several drag shows, including the Dirty Dorothy Show and PHAT Tuesdays, take place. This is where you can get your dose, or occasional overdose, of drag queens. The stage and performers liven up the bottom floor. On the other side of the room, there are areas to hang out with friends, sit at the bar and meet new people.

After a few cocktails, many people feel like dancing. After a stumble up the stairs, you will find a dance floor with party lights, poles and a DJ spinning club music. This is a great opportunity to leave your heart on the dance floor and not worry about your lack of rhythm. The top floor is equipped with several bars as well, so there’s no need to trek downstairs for another drink.

Are you a smoker and hate going outside every time you want to light up? Missie B’s has a two-level, ventilated, indoor back porch for all nicotine needs. This porch also contains a bar with a style of its own.

The popularity of the club and the occasional cover charges are the only downsides. On the weekends, the bar can seem like a fraternity party with a shoulder-to-shoulder capacity and steep cover charges. However, for the most part, Missie B’s is sure to satisfy.

For those who are not the club type, a sports bar may fulfill your drinking desires. Outabounds is a gay sports bar and grill where people can watch the game, play some pool or just hang out with friends in a neighborly environment.

Providing great food and even better drinks, Outabounds fills the need for a low-key, friendly bar. Some nights, karaoke is in the mix. This is a great bar to unwind, toss darts with a friend, put on a good song using the modern jukebox and have fun. The friendly staff adds to the experience.

Kansas City is home to many gay bars including Missie B’s, Outabounds, Sidekicks, 1822 Ultra Lounge, Buddies and more. Each has its strengths and weaknesses. If you want to go to a club and dance the night away, head to Missie B’s. If you want to chill out, head to Outabounds. If you want to explore the city and change it up a bit, try one of the several other gay bars in town.

Finally, be safe, do not drink and drive and – most of all – have a gay ole time!

Toodles for now,

Phoenix Rishon
