During SGA’s bi-weekly meeting on Feb. 24 in the SGA Chambers, they passed new legislation, proposed new policies and swore in two Supreme Court Justices.
The new legislation passed will allow for more representation from different groups in the Greek community to help make decisions.
“The new legislation will indicate that all councils and all chapters can have their members represent Greek life at SAFC meetings,” said Olivia Christensen, a Senate member and senior studying history. “I just wanted our legislation to reflect inclusivity and the fact that we do value each and every member of the Greek community.”
Also discussed at the meeting was legislation relating to changes in the ways that SGA Senate members interact with the tip box. The tip box is a form where students can submit concerns to SGA.
“People would take Senate a lot more seriously if they know that not just one person is working on one issue but a whole group of students is working on the issue,” said Shewit Abai, a Senate member and senior studying chemistry, Spanish and biology.
Two previous Supreme Court Justices from last term were sworn in again because of their good work in the past.
William Workcuff, sophomore studying political science, and Mia Forney, sophomore studying criminal justice were sworn in again by a nearly unanimous vote.
Coming up on the SGA agenda is the election cycle for this year. The last day to enter the running for a position is March 4.
Voting starts on March 11 and ends on March 18.
“One thing that is really important is for students to know who their candidates are, what they stand for and what they plan to do,” said Lily Atkaa, sophomore studying biology and the new election director. “That could really help increase voter turnout. If students feel like their voices are heard and they feel like they really connect with a certain candidate, that can increase voter turnout.”
Atkaa has specific plans for increasing the number of interested voters in the coming cycle.
“I hope to host a meet the candidates forum where students can come and question candidates on their future plans,” said Atkaa.
Students who want to leave a comment for SGA should submit through the tip box.
