The short list of dining options near UMKC campus has welcomed a new restaurant for students to enjoy.
A quick walk down 51st Street will bring you to Mildred’s, a new sandwich and coffee shop that opened Jan. 10 in the South Plaza.
Mildred’s has proven successful in its Crossroads Arts District and Historic 9th Street District locations. Deciding to branch out, they brought their establishment to the outskirts of UMKC.
Entering the building, customers will be welcomed by its cozy, industrial atmosphere, with distinct crossbeams running across the ceiling coupled with lush greenery. If you’re expecting an unknown hole in the wall, prepare to be disappointed. Everyone knows about this place, so prepare for a bustling lunchtime restaurant.
The staff at Mildreds is one of its best qualities. They strive for excellent service and are quick to get your food out.
The menu at Mildred’s has an array of choices.
For breakfast, the Standard Sandwich offers a classic approach to the breakfast sandwich with a bread of choice. For lunch, one could choose from a Classic BLT, to a Chipotle Turkey Wrap, or their Cranberry Turkey.
When it comes to coffee, Mildred’s offers a standard American coffee shop selection, including lattes and cappuccinos.
I ordered their Ham and Swiss Sandwich along with their Milly’s Iced Au Lait cold brew. The sandwich comes with thick-cut ham, mayo, pickles, tomato, arugula and swiss on a brioche bun.
As a pickle hater, I was reluctant to keep them on the sandwich, but for the sake of the review, I powered through. The pickles were my favorite part of the sandwich. I’m not sure if their herb mayo masks the “pickle-ness” of the pickles, but I only noticed the saltiness of them.
Milly’s Iced Au Lait is all you can ask for from a cold brew. Its strong coffee taste in addition to the vanilla give it a unique taste of sweetness while also jolting you awake.
