School can be rough, but with the right song those long days can feel a bit more bearable. Here is a survival playlist–one song per day–to help you make it through the week.
Monday: “Here, There And Everywhere” – The Beatles
A soft song like “Here, There And Everywhere” is perfect for easing into a Monday without overwhelming yourself. Written by Paul McCartney about his then-girlfriend Jane Asher, the song is a beautiful love ballad. It feels nearly impossible to have a bad day while listening to something so romantic.
Tuesday: “Sweet Life” – Frank Ocean
The slow build up throughout “Sweet Life” parallels the slow build up of the week. Each instrument slowly gets louder between verse and pre-chorus before reaching its peak in the chorus. That steady incline feels motivational, and Frank Ocean’s talent in lyricism is just a bonus.
Wednesday: “Playground” – Steve Lacy
Something funky and energetic works great to combat that hump day slump you might be feeling. Steve Lacy’s “Playground” encapsulates that energy perfectly. There’s no way you won’t feel productive listening to that groovy bass line and those dramatically reverbed high notes.
Thursday: “Simulation Swarm” – Big Thief
“Simulation Swarm” by Big Thief is energetic enough to keep you going but soft enough to wind down the week. Similar to “Sweet Life,” the song builds up throughout but stays relatively calm. Adrianne Lenker, lead vocalist and songwriter, is able to paint a beautiful picture with her voice, and her work—both with Big Thief and her solo projects—is worth a listen.
Friday: “American Boy” – Estelle ft. Kanye West
The disco and funk influences incorporated into Estelle’s “American Boy” make it the perfect dance song to celebrate the end of the week. Mixed with an R&B flow, it’s insanely catchy. There’s no option but to sing along whenever this nostalgic hit plays.
Saturday: “360 featuring robyn and yung lean” – Charli xcx
Though perhaps overplayed this past summer, I still believe Charli xcx has mastered the art of electronic pop. The iconic synths of the original “360” paired with features from pop icon Robyn and cult classic Yung Lean create the perfect atmosphere for a well deserved night out. Yung Lean’s pre-chorus is sure to get stuck in your head, and maybe even relieve the stress of upcoming assignments.
Sunday: “Pier 4” – Clairo
“Pier 4” provides a moment for reflection. The soft guitar throughout the song is good for unwinding. Clairo’s soft vocals and almost melancholic lyrics are also great for some introspection if you want to lean into those Sunday blues. Either way, it feels like the perfect way to wrap up a week and mentally prepare yourself for the next.
